HAFFIR

OVERVIEW

Haffir is a very unique and essential water harvesting technique that was implemented in Qardho, Puntland State of Somalia with World Food Programme (WFP) being the prime donor while Puntland Development Organization (PDO) as their Co-operating Partner (CP) in this Project. The Haffir was started on the 1st August 2015 and successfully completed on the 20th December 2016. This important water harvesting Haffir is situated and adjacent to Bulla Qodax and New Camp IDP Camps which are located approximately two kilometers (2km) to the South of Qardho Town.

CONCLUSION

Initially the idea of constructing this Haffir implemented in Qardho was meant as a trial since it was the first and exclusive water harvesting technique to be commenced at this juncture. Moreover, Qardho being one of the areas known to be swamped with high velocity of water during the rainy season, Haffir was the response in such a way that the rain water is harvested into its dam, passing through inlet basin and pipes, then the rain water that is in the dam is carried away by an outlet pipe that takes it to the filtration well whereby the pure filtration takes place and afterwards the clean and consumable filtrated water is hence stored into the clean water well fixed with two boreholes to pump the water from the clean water storage well for the basic beneficial consumption by the vulnerable target groups around and outside the Haffir vicinity.

Furthermore, the commencement and successful finalization period of this Qardho implemented Haffir was completed within a period of just two years in accordance with the magnitude of the high level task that was paramount during the implementation process.

What’s more is that for these two years, the working beneficiaries were every month receiving food entitlements in the form of voucher through the utilization of the POS machines of the scope system. These beneficiaries were both men and women from the different categories of the community including Internally Displaced People (IDP’s), Minority groups, unskilled and other vulnerable individuals among the community hence wraps up by being clear about the Haffir taking part in the relocation of the IDP’s, peaceful co-existence in the district and at the same time elevates intermingling between the different categories of the vulnerable people mentioned above. In addition to that it also prevented child traffickers and pirates who could have taken advantage of them hence prolong their uncouth practice. The entitlements were more than enough for their basic needs upkeep every month in view of the fact that the implemented Haffir itself will be an asset for them at long last.

Finally on behave of Puntland Development Organization (PDO), the community that took a lion’s share in the well capacitated activities of this project and the Qardho local authority whom without their cooperation the implementation of this project could have been hard, to hereby specifically and enormously thank our donors,, the World Food Program me(WFP) who were spearheading the placement of this important Haffir in Qardho for their tremendous effort and perseverance during the whole  process of the Haffir execution from the start, middle up to the final completion of these necessary and exceptional water harvesting technique ordained  to benefit the different categories of the vulnerable community members  in Qardho vicinity .

To end with, we would like to once again commemorate the sincere involvement of WFP as far as the whole process of this valuable project was concerned through hard work, dedication, tolerance and teamwork by all of their competent staff at both the managerial as well as the operation level for the desired accomplishment of the targeted goals and victorious objectives of the Haffir project that will be an inheritable asset to the vulnerable different groups of the community.

Lastly, Puntland Development Organization (PDO) honestly appreciates and applaud WFP and all the other concerned bodies mentioned above for helping the deteriorating state of the target groups pointed out in the report and request for all to carry on extending their helping hand in future.
